Birth-chart foundations

Aspects show how the chart speaks to itself.

An aspect is an angular relationship between two chart points. Astrologers use the angle to explore how two planetary functions reinforce, challenge, activate, or adjust to one another.

From geometry to interpretation

Start with the planets, then read the relationship.

  1. 01

    Name both functions

Mercury concerns thought and exchange; Saturn concerns structure and responsibility. Keep each planet’s role clear.

  2. 02

    Identify the angle

The aspect describes the kind of relationship: concentrated, cooperative, tense, flowing, polarized, or adaptive.

  3. 03

    Add signs and houses

Signs describe style; houses describe life areas. These layers make the same aspect look different from chart to chart.

  4. 04

    Compare with life

Treat the interpretation as a question to test against experience, not a verdict about character or destiny.

Six useful relationships

The major aspects

Aspect families describe different kinds of work. Friction can create skill; ease can remain undeveloped. No angle is automatically fortunate or harmful.

Concentration

Conjunction

Two planetary functions occupy nearly the same part of the zodiac. Their themes combine, intensify, or become difficult to separate.

How can these two drives cooperate without one swallowing the other?
60°

Opportunity

Sextile

The planets are linked by a supportive angle often associated with openings, skills, and cooperation that develops through participation.

What available strength becomes useful when I actively engage it?
90°

Friction

Square

Two functions meet at a right angle. Their competing demands can create pressure, conflict, motivation, and the need to build a new response.

What repeated tension is asking for a more conscious strategy?
120°

Flow

Trine

The planets operate through a harmonious angle, often making the connection feel natural. Ease can become a resource or an ability taken for granted.

Which natural capacity deserves deliberate use rather than assumption?
180°

Polarity

Opposition

The planets face one another across the chart. The pattern can appear through projection, relationship, alternating extremes, or a search for integration.

What seems like an either-or choice but may require a living balance?
150°

Adjustment

Quincunx

The planets share little obvious common ground. Their different priorities may require recurring adjustment, translation, and practical accommodation.

What needs ongoing calibration rather than one final solution?

How close is close enough?

Understanding the orb

An aspect’s orb is the distance from exactness. If two planets are 92° apart, their square has a 2° orb. Smaller orbs are generally treated as more concentrated, but astrologers differ about acceptable limits.

ContextConservative starting range
Sun or Moon involvedUp to about 8°
Other major planetsUp to about 6°
SextileOften kept within 4–5°
Quincunx or minor aspectsOften kept within 2–3°

These are teaching ranges, not universal rules. A chart should state the orb system being used rather than presenting one convention as objective fact.

Motion adds timing context

Applying and separating aspects

An applying aspect moves toward exactness; a separating aspect has already been exact and is moving apart. Some astrologers interpret applying aspects as more emergent or pressing and separating aspects as more familiar or established.

This distinction depends on planetary motion and requires accurate chart calculations. It refines an interpretation; it does not turn symbolism into a guaranteed event.

Interpretation in context

Examples without one-word labels

Moon square Saturn

Emotional needs and responsibility may feel at odds. The pattern could support restraint and reliability while asking whether self-protection has become isolation.

Mercury trine Jupiter

Thinking and meaning-making may cooperate easily. Broad perspective can support communication, while details still need attention.

Venus opposite Mars

Receptivity and pursuit may alternate or appear through relationship dynamics. Integration means making room for both desire and mutuality.

Sun conjunct Uranus

Identity and independence may be closely linked. Originality can be central, while reflexive rebellion may need conscious direction.

When several aspects connect

A chart often contains configurations rather than isolated lines. A T-square links an opposition through two squares; a grand trine links three trines; a yod combines two quincunxes and a sextile. These patterns can focus attention, but they do not replace planet-by-planet interpretation.

Begin with the tightest aspects to the Sun, Moon, chart ruler, and personal planets. Add wider and generational patterns afterward so the chart remains readable.
